Make A DifferenceThe focus of the health care ministry this year is "compassion for the health of others." Consider taking part and you can make a difference. 1. KIDS WEBSITES · Fun stuff for the 9-13 year olds, a terrific website to explore about the changes in their bodies, nutrition, safety, physical activity, your life, etc. 2. FITNESS · Be active your way (scroll down to get to the contents section) · There is something for everyone related to physical activity at this site · The American Council on Exercise covers a variety of subjects — from a Fitness Q & A, to healthy recipes, to a library of targeted exercises 3. MEDICAL SELF-CARE · Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts presents self care information on a variety of subjects including asthma/allergies, pain management, back care, and depression. · The Mayo Clinic’s site has a quick, easy tool for finding information. Use the alphabetical index to find facts on a disease or condition, use the symptom checker, or refer to their first aid guide. 4. NUTRITION · Ten Tips Nutrition Education series has lots of ideas if you are feeling bored with nutrition. · Tips and resources to get started eating better and feeling better · Lots to explore in the consumer corner. · The American Dietetic Association breaks down the science of nutrition into applicable, helpful consumer materials. Check out their Fact Sheets. · Delicious recipes, useful health and diet details, as well as current nutrition news are all on this site. 5. QUITTING TOBACCO · The online tools and printable resources contain reasons to stop, tips on preparing to quit, and resources for maintaining a smoke-free life. · The American Cancer Society provides tools and resources for quitting smoking. The site also details why it’s so difficult yet so important to quit. · American Lung Association support for not smoking includes data, an action plan, and tools for quitting. 6. STRESS MANAGEMENT · The American Institute of Stress explores sources and effects as well as resources for managing and treating stress and related disorders. This section of the website has great information on topics of interest related to stress. · This site examines how to cope with life challenges including symptoms to look for and tips for managing stress. 7. WEIGHT LOSS · The National Weight Control Registry is an ongoing study of those who have maintained a 30-pound or more weight loss for at least 1 year. Behaviors, strategies, and techniques are compiled into research findings, along with motivating success stories. · The Mayo Clinic provides a good overview of overweight/obesity causes, risk factors, and when to seek medical advice. Potential complications (such as high blood pressure) as well as treatment, prevention, and coping skills also are discussed. At the bottom of the page, check out “see also….
